Las Chicas - Review - Balaclava

Las Chicas (203 Carlisle St, Balaclava, VIC 3183) is one of many cafes and restaurants dotting Balaclava.  It seems that there has been a bundle of activity as so many new shops and eateries seem to have sprung up in the past six months.  Good or bad news depending on your point of view.

Anyway, Las Chicas is probably one of the most popular cafes going around here.  Most probably populated almost only by locals it does seem very popular.  It caters for a youngish crowd, by that I mean uni students, backpackers and 20-30 year olds.  Just an observation.

Since, I'd already had a sizeable brunch all that was in order was more of a snack.  Las Chicas ready prepared offerings are okay but not that great so its probably better to have built up a bit of hunger beforehand so you can order off their menu which certainly has plenty on offer with a bit of Jewish food included.  This is Balaclava afterall.

Anyway, the bagel with dill and caper cream cheese was good but not fantastic.  It was nicely toasted, fresh and presented as good as you'll ever get however the caper flavour was just too absent.  If not for that it would have been the perfect bagel so they almost had everything right.

The vegetarian savoury scone was presented in identical manner to the bagel.  This is certainly a nice way to do it.  While the quantity of provided butter is certainly extreme (in  a good way) it does match perfectly with the scone.  All round - all good.
